Kathy (M.K.) McDaniel had a near-death experience while in a medically-induced coma from severe pneumonia. What she witnessed during those moments of clinical death challenges everything we think we know about consciousness and what happens after we die. Her experience included terrifying visions followed by profound joy, providing compelling evidence that awareness continues beyond physical death.

About This Episode

Kathy was raised Catholic and believed everything she was taught about the afterlife, including concepts of purgatory and hell. When she fell critically ill in Seattle caring for a dying friend, she contracted a severe flu. By the time she reached the hospital, she had no pulse. Doctors told her family she had only a 38 percent chance of survival due to lung failure. They put her into a drug-induced coma and told her she wouldn't remember anything. They were wrong.

Events :IANDS Conference |Forever Family Foundation Grief Reteat

The Dark Segments

  • Watched paramedics from outside his body trying to revive him

  • Observed defibrillation shocks being administered to his heart

  • Saw his body being placed in a bag

  • Watched the ambulance transport his body

  • Observed his arm being strapped down in the ICU when he arrived at the hospital

  • Initially thought he was watching a film project because the body didn't look like him (face was contorted, purple and yellow)

  • Realized it was his own body only when he felt his arm being strapped

The Non-Physical Journey

  • Woke up in a completely dark place called the Void with no sound or light

  • Saw rolling reddish fog with people screaming and moaning

  • Experienced a series of different scenes: a bombed-out city with fires and chaos, encounters with tall hairy demon-like beings

  • Was given impossible tasks like clearing blackberry bushes with kindergarten scissors that regrew instantly

  • Found herself in a bright white hospital room with gurneys covered in white sheets

  • Was forced to carry what she describes as aborted babies from one room to another

  • Walked an interminable dusty road that felt like a moonscape with a reddish glow on the horizon

  • Encountered a relative who refused to share food, saying it was only for important people

  • Faced a group of zombie-like beings that attacked her in a horrific gang situation

  • Was forced into a freezing tundra wearing rags, herded into a ramshackle shack

  • Learned it was Christmas on Earth, described as the worst day in hell

The Turning Point

  • Sarted singing Away in a Manger, a Christmas carol

  • The demon lady became upset and shrieked at her

  • In that moment, the lights went out and came back with what felt like an explosion of joy, love, and bliss

  • Found herself rolling in a cloud with sparkles, experiencing unbelievable happiness

  • Saw her best friend who had died the month before from leukemia, looking young and healthy

  • Her friend was wearing a sweater she had given him for Christmas

  • Realized she was on the other side, what she called “heaven” and didn't want to leave

  • Her friend told her she had too much left to do on Earth

  • Refused to go back and stamped her foot like a three-year-old

  • Woke up in the hospital with her family surrounding her bed

What Changed

  • Spent three weeks in ICU, lost all muscle mass, weighed only 86 pounds

  • Had to relearn how to walk, crawl, eat, and swallow

  • Was haunted by fear she would die again and go back to the dark place

  • Ten years later discovered IANDS (International Association for Near-Death Studies)

  • Found she was not alone. About 18 to 20 percent of near-death experiencers have distressing experiences

  • Started a monthly sharing group where people tell their stories for the first time

  • Discovered more than 85 percent of people with distressing NDEs are Catholics or recovering Catholics

  • Came to understand she manifested what she expected based on her religious upbringing

  • Can trace each terrible episode back to actual trauma from her life

  • Her father who passed away from COVID three years ago now communicates with her through signs

  • He helps her find lost items and flickers lights to let her know he's present
