Amazon | Apple | Overcast | YouTube | Spotify
David Ferrugio lost his father on 9/11 when he was 12 years old. Now he hosts the podcast Dead Talks, interviewing hundreds of people about death, grief, and how facing what we fear most teaches us to live more fully. His new book, You're Not Dead Yet, explores how grief and loss can teach you how to live. His work is rooted in a simple belief: when we face death openly, we learn how to live more completely.
About This Episode
In this conversation, David shares how losing his father at 12 shaped his approach to mortality and meaning. He discusses the choice between fear and action, opens up about a remarkable moment at the 9/11 memorial, and explores how normalizing death conversations changes how we live. When Loss Becomes a Teacher
Losing his father unexpectedly at 12 taught him that grief is inevitable
The real choice is how you respond: with paralysis or with intentional movement forward
He could have chosen to live in constant worry about other losses
Instead he chose gratitude for the people still here
Processing grief means allowing yourself to genuinely feel it, then asking: what do we do next?
Taking things one step at a time creates calmness and clarity in the moment
The Sign at the 9/11 Memorial
David was showing his girlfriend New York City for the first time
They visited the 9/11 memorial spontaneously with no plans
As they walked into a specific section, audio played naming victims
In that moment, he heard his mother's voice speaking his father's name
The timing was extraordinary. If they'd hesitated or walked right, it wouldn't have happened
To him, it felt like a nod from his father saying "I'm here with you"
He acknowledges skeptics could call it probability, but the timing was spectacular
The Meaning We Give Experiences
Any sign or experience gets its power from the meaning we assign to it
We define and perceive everything in life in some capacity
If you dismiss all possibilities, that's what you'll get
If you stay open to possibilities, you leave room for something to happen
Living in balance means staying open without being attached to outcomes
The brain kicks in with doubt and noise. Sometimes you have to push that aside
The Absurdity of Existence
The fact that we exist is absurd when you really think about it
We're floating on a rock in space among planets and a massive sun
Yet we doubt other possibilities or signs that come across us
The absurdity of life is what makes him excited, even when it's difficult
Everything around us is invisible magic, yet we rationalize away other experiences
When you slow down and look up at the cosmos, you realize how magnificent existence is
Dead Talks and Normalizing Death
His podcast asks the questions most people are afraid to voice
By having open conversations about death, people learn to live differently
Bridging philosophy, spirituality, psychology, and lived experience in one place
Interviewing hundreds of people from all walks of life with different perspectives
The message: normalizing death conversations doesn't increase fear. It decreases it
When we face mortality openly, we understand how to prioritize and live more fully
